The Nature of God and Successful Prayer: Principle – Part Seven

Do you desire more harmony in your business or relationships, and have prayed for positive change with no results? You are not alone. Many people feel disconnected during prayer and become discouraged because they do not see negative situations turning around. Often, we have tuned out mentally from God.

Emmet Fox, a New Thought minister from the 1940’s, taught that focusing on God first produces results. His book Alter Your Life helped many people understand their relationship to God, and to bring themselves into harmony with the law of being. His essay, The Seven Main Aspects of God, explained how to embrace the idea of divine principle to set negative conditions right.

Let’s complete our series on prayer and learn to put your energy and thoughts in the right place.

The Seventh Aspect: Principle

The seventh aspect of God is principle. I see this as the unchangeable structure, or rule, behind our living existence.

For example, the principle of thermal expansion says that most solids, liquids and gases expand when heated. Most materials are subject to thermal expansion and they tend to expand when heated, and contract when cooled.  Bridges are built with metal expansion joints, so they can expand and contract without ruining the structure. If you heat a piece of steel, it will expand, no matter if it is in a bridge or another kind of steel structure. Size or design makes no difference. The principle of expansion is the same because it is unchanging. The principle is not the action of making the bridge or any other product.  It is not the steel.  It is the fact that matter expands under heat.

Emmet points out another principle: The angles of a triangle always add up to 180 degrees. This principle exists in all triangles.  The area of any triangle can be a square inch or a square mile. The principle is the same. The law of gravitation is another principle that never changes nor ceases to operate.

These principles are always true. They do not change. There are no exceptions, as far as we know. They have been true a million years ago and will be true tomorrow and many days after.

God is Principle, the principle of perfect harmony, and this is the nature of his creation. Perfect harmony is the law of being. Prayer is answered because God is principle and successful prayer, which is prayer that produces results, brings you into harmony with the law of being.  In prayer, you cannot change the universal law and will see no results by asking God to change the laws for your convenience.  For example, if you pray for the law of gravity to change, so your friends won’t die if they leap off a 100-story skyscraper, you are asking for a principle to change, in this case, the law of gravity.  You do not pray to change the principle or laws of nature.  You pray to tune into the principle that already exists, which is perfect harmony.  This is the way to set things right in your life.

Think Big

We spend a lot of time agonizing over defeat and difficult situations. The reason they occur is because we have tuned out mentally from God, or the divine principle of our being. It is difficult to watch the news and believe that the world is in perfect harmony, given all the strife and political unrest we currently see. It seems challenging to believe that the world is harmonious; therefore, the challenge is to think big. We must rise to a higher level of consciousness, and know that all that we see is governed by divine principle (and remember, it is an illusion because matter is not reality!) God is intelligence and does not waste in the universal totality. There is an intelligence and love so vast where each element, individual, or thing plays an exceptional role in a perfect process.

I like to think that all life is involved in a learning process, and our self-development journey is to evolve to higher consciousness. It is the essential integration of many experiences, both perceived good and bad, at an individual, national, and global level.  Everything and everyone has a purpose that is governed by the divine principle of perfect harmony.  Any intelligence so vast could not be otherwise.

When you are discouraged, or you have feelings of prejudice, hostility, resentment, or malice toward another, it is helpful to realize that Principle is the power that will help you shift to better circumstances. This is the time to ‘rise above’ a situation and pour love into it.  It is time to understand that the divine principle of perfect harmony is the only power that exists.

Daily Practice: Practicing the Presence of God as Principle

  1. Give your attention to God, not your problem. Claim you understand that there is a principle of perfect harmony in the universe. See the universe as a vast collection of life, experiences, and events.
  2. Consider a difficult situation you are experiencing. Claim that harmony works through you. Acknowledge that divine principle is at work in your life and in the life of others. See that an organized structure holds the universe together.
  3. Recognize that divine principle is an aspect of God. Know that it is unchanging and powerful. Feel harmony working through you. See yourself as one who brings harmony to any situation.
  4. Shift your energy to a positive state, where you feel the difficulty in your life is changing for the better. See a positive outcome, and claim that the situation is healed. Be confident.
  5. Give thanks for the positive outcome and all you have received.

Successful Prayer

These aspects of God are always true, so in prayer, it is helpful to think about two or more of them. Be diligent and pray regularly. At a minimum, when you feel angry or depressed, or a negative condition arises, turn back to one of more of these aspects and claim that the presence of God is at work in your life. Claim that these qualities are with you always, and work through you.

The entire universe, and everything we experience, is a complex, interdependent system of thoughts.  One thing cannot change without changing another.  Therefore, to change our situations or the way we experience life, we must first make change in our minds. All else will follow!

The Nature of God and Successful Prayer: Spirit – Part Six

Do you spend time thinking about negative conditions or the end of the world? Are you having trouble seeing good in others? If you have prayed for positive change with no results, you are not alone. Many people feel disconnected or distracted during prayer, and can’t seem to focus on what’s truly permanent or important in life.

Emmet Fox, a New Thought minister from the 1940’s, taught that focusing on God’s qualities is the best way to turn negative conditions around. His book Alter Your Life helped many people understand their relationship to God to experience more peaceful and productive lives. Emmet’s essay The Seven Main Aspects of God addresses spirit, and how we can release limiting thoughts to see the beauty in life.

Let’s continue to expand, and release limiting thoughts. This will open your door to a happier life.

The Sixth Aspect: Spirit

Unlike matter, spirit is permanent substance. Matter is limited and decays. Spirit is eternal. Any material item deteriorates over time. Spirit, like energy, cannot be destroyed or downgraded.

While your spirit resides in the human body, it cannot disappear at the end of your earth life.  It was not born, it will never die.  It is your true self and does not change.

Matter wears out, like your house or clothing.  Your car deteriorates, as all other material items, but this is wonderful quality because it allows for their replacement of new and better things. It drives innovation and your imagination, because you must constantly think about improving what you have. Although many types of cells in your body can regenerate (for example, the outer layer of skin replaces itself every 35 days) and the human body is in a constant state of renewal and replacement, nobody has figured out how to make your body last forever.  It does wear out, but spirit doesn’t because it is not subject to decay.

The entire universe is an interesting creation. You might believe it was an accident, or a giant collision of astronomical bodies, or a spiritual creation. Whatever you believe, your existence is an illusion. Quantum physicists have discovered that physical-material reality isn’t physical at all. Atoms are not the smallest particles of the universe; they are made from even smaller subatomic particles that emit constantly vibrating and spinning energy.

Each atom radiates its own unique energy. The atom has no physical structure and neither do we. Nor does any other material thing. Legendary physicist Max Planck said that there is no matter; all matter arises and persists only due to a force that causes atomic particles to vibrate, holding them together in the tiniest of solar systems, the atom. The origin of all matter, he said, is a force that is conscious, intelligent mind or spirit. Something must hold it all together.

We Are Energy

Fundamentally, we are all energy, not tangible matter, because when we look closely, there is nothing solid there. Energy vibrates at a lower frequency so we can perceive it in our dimension. What does that mean? It means that what we see is not what is. We see the world in a limited, distorted way. Matter is unreal; it is an illusion facilitated by our senses and it is only our perception of a state of consciousness. We see certain objects and participate in different events in the world, but they are all mental experiences that we give objective existence.

From a spiritual perspective, this underlying energy is the glue that informs the patterns of sub atomic particles. Their vibration and relationship to one another, is God or spirit. Spirit can never die.  It is the true substance.  This aspect of God is part of you.  It IS you.

Whether a good or bad perception, matter is only a distorted vision of spirit. Matter can be beautiful in the form of nature, art, or any number of gorgeous material things, but it is really spirit shining through. Emmet taught that the veil of matter (the limitation of our thoughts) in a beautiful landscape is relatively thin, and in an ugly war zone or slum, the same veil is comparatively thick, but that’s the only difference. The presence of God, and any quality we see, is apprehended through the veil of matter.

If you are experiencing trouble, or something in your life seems to be damaged or in a state of decay, it is time to realize the aspect of God as Spirit. By realizing the aspect of God as spirit where the trouble seems to be, the condition will improve itself.  Remember, matter is not reality. A negative condition is a spiritual idea seen in a limited way.  When you realize this, and affirm that God exists behind the thing or situation, it will change for the better.

Daily Practice: Practicing the Presence of God as Spirit

  1. Think about the entire world, your home, place of work, the people you know, and your body. Imagine the sub atomic particles of these things as vibration or energy.
  2. Visualize the nature of God as Spirit, and think about the unchanging nature of spirit, as the only reality. Feel the presence of God behind any material item or situation.
  3. In your mind, see that everything is a spiritual idea. See that you are spirit and not a physical body.
  4. Claim that spirit dwells in you and in anyone or any situation that you are concerned about. Claim that everything and everyone has the same spiritual substance within them.
  5. Affirm that any trouble is a spiritual idea, seen in a limited way. Feel yourself ‘rising above it.’ Let go of the situation.

Successful Prayer

Pray regularly. Spend less time complaining and more time engaged in positive solutions.  If you see a deficiency in your relationships or current conditions, acknowledge that spirit is shared by everyone. You can energetically rise above any circumstance and change yourself, and those around you, for the better. Claim that the presence of God is at work in your life. Claim that spirit is with you always, and works through you.

The entire universe, and everything we experience, is a connected system. One thing cannot change without changing another. Therefore, to change our situations or the way we experience life, we must first make change in our minds. All else will follow!

The Nature of God and Successful Prayer: Intelligence – Part Four

Do you feel certain areas in your life seem to be going wrong? Has a business deal reached a deadlock or have other conditions in your life seem to be at a standstill? If you have prayed for positive change with no results, you are not alone. Wasting time and energy in the ‘wrong direction’ to fix a problem means you need to think about God in an intelligent way.

According to Emmet Fox, a New Thought minister from the 1940’s, focusing on God qualities first produces results. His book Alter Your Life helped many people understand their relationship to God, and how to tune into God on a regular basis. This series continues to discuss Emmet’s spiritual essay The Seven Main Aspects of God.

Let’s continue to put your thoughts in the right place, so you can learn to have a successful prayer.

The Fourth Aspect: Intelligence

Prayer is thinking about God’s aspects. God is Intelligence Itself, not an intelligent being with many brilliant ways of organizing our lives.  We reside in an intelligent universe. It is efficient. Nothing is designed that is wasteful or without purpose. An intelligent universe is harmonious with all ideas working together for a reason. There are no unnecessary parts. It is perfect and complete, and everything serves an important purpose.

Attract What You Lack

If you dwell on love, life, truth, or intelligence, you are developing those qualities in yourself. As you think, so shall you be. When you think of those qualities in other people, you develop that quality in others. If you want to attract more love in your relationships, then think of yourself as a loving individual. Be loveable in your words and deeds, and practice loving kindness toward others. Stop criticizing your boss or the current political state of affairs and generate a better attitude toward others.  Recognize the good in people. You will see instant results.

To think of God as Intelligence, is to become more intelligent yourself. You will attract smarter, more efficient business dealings, and have an easier time dealing with difficult people. Know that divine intelligence works in you, through you, and through other people because they were created from the same divine substance as you.  If their acts are despicable, condemn the act, but not the human being, and realize that intelligence resides in him or her.  Their essence is the same; they are simply not awakened to their true potential.  To write off people as stupid, stubborn, lazy,  or evil doesn’t make positive change.

Most people are interested in creating a better world through a wide variety of opportunities such as education, economic self-sufficiency, or non-violence.  If you are among those who have a moment to help another individual’s situation beyond practical measures, then take time to realize the intelligence within them.  See divine love, truth, life, and intelligence within them instead of posting negative verbiage on the social media.  If enough people do it, the consciousness of all men and women will rise because the collective vibration with be closer to God’s vibration of harmony and infinite abundance. Doing this will steer everyone toward common sense and goodness.

An Intelligent Universe

If you think you are a vitally important expression of an intelligent universe, you will begin to see less limitation in your daily experiences.  Think about God as Intelligence and claim this quality lives within you. See it in others, and every activity of your life will begin to be more efficient. You will be shown better ways to perform your job. You will attract a higher quality of life, and solutions to problems that put you up against a wall will be presented. Remember, every quality you develop in yourself develops the same quality in another individual.

Everyone needs to work in conjunction with the powers of an intelligent universe, not contrary to it.  Being in awe of our ecosystem or the way the human body was designed is a good place to start. Imagine the endless collection of planets in space. Think about the sheer genius that permeates life as a whole. All of us are part of a very big, harmonious idea that is so big, it’s humbling to realize the intelligence that binds it together. Nobody is outside of this intelligence.  It is in us and works through us. Realize the quality of intelligence first in yourself, claim it, and then see the intelligence that resides in all people and situations.

Daily Practice: Practicing the Presence of God as Intelligence

  1. Think about God. Recognize that God is Intelligence Itself and has no reason to create disharmony, waste, or any inefficiencies. Your purpose on earth is to be part of a greater whole, so think about having an important role in the way the universe works.
  2. Claim that intelligence resides in you and is expressed by you. See it expressed in a difficult individual. Stop analyzing a troubling situation which seems to be unfixable. It could be about health, business, or difficult children. Realize that divine intelligence exists in that person or in that situation.
  3. Recognize God as Intelligence. Sit in this feeling for a few minutes. Have gratitude that you have this quality in yourself.

Successful Prayer

Prayer is thinking about God. Chose to dwell upon the aspects of God, not your problem.  When you do, you develop that quality in yourself and in other people around you. Be diligent and pray regularly. At a minimum, when a negative condition arises, turn back to this aspect and claim that the presence of God is at work in your life. Claim that this quality is with you always, and works through you.

The entire universe, and everything we experience, is a complex, interdependent system of thoughts.  One thing cannot change without changing another.  Therefore, to change our situations or the way we experience life, we must first make change in our minds. All else will follow!

The Nature of God and Successful Prayer: Truth – Part Two

Do you want better relationships, a better job, and have prayed for positive change with little or no results? This is the second part of my series on prayer. Emmet Fox, a New Thought minister from the 1940’s, taught that focusing on God first produces results. This series helps you understand Emmet’s spiritual essay The Seven Main Aspects of God from his book Alter Your Life.  These lessons are timeless and have helped many people tune into God on a regular basis.

Let’s continue to think positive and put your energy in the right place!

The Second Aspect: God as Truth

God is Truth. If men or women were truthful, they would express the characteristic of truth.  We might say, “this person is truthful” or “that person is honest and tells the truth and speaks the truth.” But the nature of God is absolute truth. God is limitless and all-knowing. God is not truthful, but is truth itself.  There can only be one truth.  Absolute truth is unchanging and is truth itself.  Truth is not a statement or idea we have about what is right or wrong. It is not a point of view, dogma, or belief system.  Truth is an aspect of God, and is part of his nature.

Some things you experience may seem truthful or people may say they speak the truth on any number of things, but how do we know for certain?  There is no way to really know. Many things can be true or not true, according to your point of view. An individual can express their truth in certain situations or make decisions which they feel are true.  We can make ‘speaking our truth’ a priority in our daily lives, and do our best to see the truth the best we can.  But there is still only one truth. God is absolute truth at all times, in all places, and in all circumstances.

When you think about the nature of God as truth, send truth to an individual or situation and healing will happen. If you embrace divine truth, and pour it into any condition, the condition will resolve itself.  Then, you can release your worries permanently about that condition.  Without worry, fear, or doubt you can release that condition and be free of it.

As humans, it is not possible to know the absolute truth about any problem or condition. Instead, we must rely upon God as our agent of truth.  However, God is more than an agent. He doesn’t bring truth or create truth and dispense it like a judge or law enforcement officer. He is truth itself. All we can do is meditate on the aspect of truth, as it is in God, and see truth in that being or situation.

Daily Practice: Truth

  1. Think of a subject you want information about. This can be an individual, a business deal, or a relationship where things are not going well.  It can be any situation where there is a misunderstanding and you feel you may not have been given a clear set of facts. It could be an arrangement where you need more information, such as signing a contract or, starting a new business with someone. It could be an existing relationship where you are not sure that person is telling the truth.
  2. Take a few moments to get quiet and think about the nature of God as Truth. Think about God as the one channel that projects truth and is all knowing about everything and everyone. Affirm that God is truth itself, and wherever there is truth, there is God.
  3. Claim that divine truth dwells in you and the person or situation that you are concerned about. Claim that divine truth is expressed through that individual and you.
  4. If you have a troubling situation, see truth where you see trouble.
  5. Have confidence that the truth will reveal itself. Be thankful.  Know that you will be led to the right information or situation. Be aware.

Successful Prayer

In your mind, send truth to anyone or any situation that is troubling you.  Pour truth into a negative condition you are currently experiencing. See truth in the troubling person or relationship, and know this is one of the aspects of God. This is a form of prayer. It is an aspect of God. Claim in within yourself and know that God works through you.

Think about life and truth regularly. Meditating on these ideas will produce results.  You will be led from misunderstandings in relationships, or even in business, to a time where facts will be brought out or dishonesty exposed. Believe that necessary information will come to you effortlessly, and troubling situations will correct themselves.  Be patient.

Change happens first in your mind.  After that, all else will follow!

The Nature of God and Successful Prayer: Life – Part One

If you are among those who desire more money, better relationships, an interesting job, or any number of things that better your life, and have prayed for positive change with no results, you are not alone.  Many people feel disconnected or distracted during prayer. What is the purpose of prayer? How do you get centered? What should you think about and why? To whom should you pray?

Emmet Fox, a New Thought minister from the 1940’s, taught that focusing on God first produces results. Emmet’s spiritual essay The Seven Main Aspects of God from the book Alter Your Life helped many people understand their relationship to God, and how to tune into God on a regular basis.

By discussing Emmet’s ideas in this 7-part series, I’m going to help you put your energy in the right place, so you can learn to pray successfully.

Understanding God

God seems infinite and abstract. We’ve heard in many wisdom traditions that God is omnipresent, eternal, and ever-lasting. These qualities, of course, reinforce that God is unlimited in scope. But how do we relate to ideas that are truly undefinable? The Bible says God is spirit [1] and worshiping him should be in spirit and truth. But to have this close relationship, and allow God to help direct our lives, we must understand God’s nature.

This teaching helps you understand the nature of God, as a form of prayer. Daily prayer leads you closer to the life you wish to create. Thinking of God, and considering his qualities and nature, IS prayer. And that is how you solve your problems.

Emmet taught that there were seven main aspects of God.  These are fundamental and timeless truths.  They will never change. Powerful prayer that solves a problem, or makes a demonstration, involves thinking about these truths. You must identify these truths in others and in your situation, and affirm the same qualities in yourself. You can meditate on one or more of these truths every day. When you do, and know what you prayed for will come in its own time, its own way and in a form that is right for you, then you are working correctly with the energies that constitute the universe.  You are putting yourself into alignment with the power that produces change. This is what is meant by ‘let go and let God,’ or surrendering yourself to a higher power.

The First Aspect: Life

God is life. Life is all around us.  It is evidence by people, animals, vegetation, and the ecological system.  Life is everywhere, in you, and in everyone. Everything is in a state of vibration and movement. There is energy everywhere. Your existence is life. All life is God, because we cannot be outside of an infinite being, such as God.  God is all-inclusive; it is impossible to be outside of life itself.  Your life is God’s life. It is consistent, and goes on forever. God works, breathes, and realizes his being in you and through you. It is empowering to know that God experiences life through you.

In our world, it seems everyone believes in sickness, disease, or aging. If you think of God as life everlasting, those limiting beliefs become false, although we may see evidence of our own aging, or death, it is not true.  Life everlasting was one of Jesus’ main messages. Life is eternal, and God is life itself.

Realizing Life

To ‘realize’ life, means to embrace life. Know that life is in you. It emanates from you like a beacon of light. It projects everywhere.  You express life in your everyday actions, thoughts, and words. You can choose to express youth, vitality, energy, or negativity, doom, and conflict. When you celebrate being alive, and everlasting life, you are recognizing that God is life.

Joy is an expression of life. Joy is inclusive, positive, forward moving, and expansive.  When you delight in life, you express joy. When you are optimistic about life, you vibrate at a very high level, and raise other people’s vibrations around you.  You become lighter. This is attractive and inspires people.  It is a state of awareness that attracts goodness. Life is God who is experiencing himself though you.  Joy is loving engagement in life, which is a very beautiful expression. Joy is experiencing the life that is in front of you, no matter where you are or who you are with. Being joyful means to dwell in the present moment and rejoice in your aliveness as a human being.

Practice The Presence of God as Life

The next time you are in a public place like a shopping mall, subway, or store, declare the presence of God as Life in all who are present.  Recognize that life dwells in everyone; life is endless and limitless. I do this all the time on airplanes. For a few minutes, I contemplate God as life, and seek to internalize that quality in myself and everyone on the airplane. You will see a difference in the energy level. It will feel happier and lighter. Try it.

If someone is sick, depressed, discouraged, or struggling, think about God as Life. Relax your body, and quietly invite the Great Universal Power to come into your mind and body. Be receptive and still.  Close your eyes, and give your attention to God as Life. Feel that you know this aspect about the nature of God is true, rather than saying to yourself, “I believe.”

God is More Important than Your Problem

When we bring an issue to a higher power, we must first understand that when we dwell on our problem more than we dwell on the nature of God, nothing will ever be fixed.

If I dwell on a complex situation with people and relationships, it doesn’t change. Every effort I make to fix a problem results in another organized task list. Asking God to help begins to realign people and relationships. With consistent positive thinking, affirming the best outcome, and projecting love I can get more work done.  Recognizing that God is bigger and more important than my problem is a more powerful approach to prayer. It removes me from ‘dwelling’ and puts the energy where it needs to go, which is contemplating the nature of God first.

You have heard spiritual or religious people say that you are powerless to change anything. They say you must ‘turn your power over to God’ and ‘surrender your situation to God.’ For many, it means that you are giving up control of your life, and placing in the hands of spirit who knows better than you. Emmet’s wisdom suggests that we turn to God to contemplate his nature before using our time and energy to dwell on our problems. So, when you find yourself feeling stuck on a problem, or dwelling in negativity, change your thoughts. Think about God’s qualities first.

Daily Practice: Life

  1. When the complexity of your problem feels overwhelming, turn your attention to God. Don’t analyze your problem and make a task list to solve it. You cannot solve your problem directly by will power. Do not dwell on discouragement, depression, or negativity.
  2. Find a quiet place. Take a few moments to think of God as Life. See that life and God are the same. Know that life runs through every aspect of you and your situation or problem.
  3. Declare the presence of God as Life in all those present, and in you.
  4. Feel a sense of gratitude for being part of something greater.

Successful Prayer

Be joyful when you embrace life. If you, or another individual is depressed or discouraged, turn back to this aspect and claim that the presence of God is at work in your life. Know this quality is with you always, and works through you, and through others. Claim it.

Be disciplined about contemplating the nature of God instead of dwelling on your problem. If you want to change a negative situation or problem, change your thoughts first. All else will follow!
